What is Stern Student Council and its mission?
Stern Student Council is the student governing body of the school. We are the liaison between the student body and the administration. Our mission is to foster community within Stern, provide a forum for the student body, bridge the gap between the NYU schools, present cultural experiences, and encourage professional development.
Why should I join Student Council?
Student Council is a great way to become an active member of the community. It provides a forum where students can voice their opinions about the school and begin to enact changes. It is also a great way to meet other Stern students and have fun!
What distinguishes Student Council from other clubs in Stern?
Student Council offers a place for Stern students, no matter what major or year, to propose actual changes in our school. It is a great opportunity for students to have a real impact on their school.
How do I join Student Council?
Anybody can join Student Council! To assume an elected leadership position (Class Representative or Cohort Director), you must attend one of our Election Interest Meetings in the Fall (and later at the end of the Spring semester for the following year). For any Class Representative position, you must petition among your fellow classmates and obtain a certain number of signatures, followed by a week of campaigning. Cohort Directors forego the petitioning but may still campaign. Beyond these elected positions, you can still join Student Council as a general member. Simply show up to general meetings (Tuesdays from 12:30pm-1:45pm) and social events. You are also encouraged to sign up for any of the existing committees and start contributing to your Stern experience immediately!
What kind of social events do you all do?
We are responsible for Casino Night, Fall Harvest, Stern Semi-Formal, Experience NYC, and many more social outings.
What do general members usually do?
General members attend the weekly general meetings, help in the planning of social events, and present problems with Stern to the board members. They also serve as committee members of their choosing to further their impact.
Do you serve food during your general meetings?
Of course! Class Treasurers rotate responsibility for ordering food for our meetings.
